At Craigslea State School, Japanese is introduced in Year 1 and taught until the end of Year 6. Students learn Japanese by developing both their communication skills and their understanding of language and culture. Students are supported to interact in Japanese through speaking, listening, reading, writing and non-verbal communication. They learn to share ideas, opinions, experiences and feelings, and create spoken, written and multimodal texts for different purposes and audiences.
Students also explore how the Japanese language works, including sounds, writing systems, grammar and text features. Through learning Japanese, students develop an understanding of how language and culture are connected. They learn to notice similarities and differences between Japanese and English, reflect on different ways of communicating, and build respect for diverse cultures and perspectives.
