Music activities

Instrumental music teachers of brass, woodwind, percussion and strings visit the school each week to teach selected pupils from middle and upper year levels. Children can begin to learn a stringed instrument from year 3 and brass, woodwind and percussion instruments from year 5.

In term 4 each year notices are given to students in years 2 & 4 (and interested students who have not had this opportunity) to find children who are keen to join the instrumental music program for the following year. Aptitude tests are conducted (by the music specialist and instrumental music teachers) and offers are made to selected students to join the program.

Notification is given to parents if a departmental instrument is available or if one will have to be purchased. Beginning students are given first choice of any available instruments.

At the beginning of each year an information evening is held for parents to explain the instrumental music program. A music charge is requested to help with the many costs involved with instrumental music such as the buying of new instruments and music for ensembles, as well as music stands. This is a $45 instrument levy and an additional $80 is charged if your child is loaning a school instrument. Each year instrumental music camps for beginner and advanced students are organised.

Music groups

Two choirs, two concert bands and two string ensembles function within the school and children are encouraged to join these groups when they have reached a participating standard.

Members of these groups are committed to attending weekly practices and lessons. Students gain enjoyment performing for our school community, and also doing public performances at various venues throughout the year. The students also benefit from the group participation.

As an opportunity to extend our more advanced students, we offer them the chance to rehearse and perform with Craigslea High School ensembles.
